The first time a client asked me why her product photos looked “different” from the preview images I’d shared during the shoot, I didn’t have a clean answer. The jpegs I’d shown her on my laptop looked punchy, warm, and finished. The delivered files, processed from RAW later that night, looked flat by comparison. Same shoot. Same camera. Completely different look. I’d forgotten to account for the camera’s built-in picture profile inflating the in-camera preview, and she’d built expectations around a lie.
That was fifteen years ago. I’ve since built a RAW processing workflow that treats consistency as a deliverable, not a bonus.
The Gap Between What Your Camera Shows You and What You Actually Captured
Every RAW file is a container of unprocessed sensor data. The thumbnail your camera displays on the LCD, and the preview that pops up when you first import into Lightroom or Capture One, is a jpeg generated by your camera’s firmware using whatever picture profile is active: Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, or whatever you’ve set. It’s a preview, not a promise.
The actual RAW data is neutral. No contrast boost, no saturation curve, no sharpening. When your processing software renders that RAW from scratch, it applies its own default interpretation, which rarely matches the camera preview. This is the gap that bites photographers who haven’t calibrated their default settings.
The fix is straightforward but requires one deliberate step. In Lightroom Classic, go to Develop, set your tone curve, white balance, and color grading to match your intended look, then save it as a default preset for each camera body (Develop menu, Set Default Settings, tied to camera serial number). Now every import from that body lands on a consistent starting point. In Capture One, this is called a Base Style, and you apply it at import via the Import dialog under Adjustments. Either way, you stop playing catch-up on every edit session.
Camera Profile Selection Is Not a Cosmetic Choice
Inside Lightroom’s Develop module, under the Camera Calibration panel (or Profile in newer versions), you’ll find profiles like Adobe Standard, Camera Faithful, Camera Landscape, and so on. Most photographers leave this on Adobe Standard and never look back. That’s a mistake.
Adobe Standard applies a generic tone interpretation that’s often flatter and cooler than what your camera’s own color science would produce. Camera Matching profiles, labeled “Camera Portrait” or “Camera Standard” depending on your body, reverse-engineer your manufacturer’s color output. For skin tones especially, a Sony a7R V shot with the Camera Portrait profile will render significantly warmer and smoother than the same file on Adobe Standard.
Pick one profile per camera body, apply it to your import preset, and commit. Consistency across a session matters more than finding the theoretically “best” profile. Clients who see cohesion across 400 frames read it as professional competence, even if they can’t articulate why.
A Practical RAW Editing Pass: What I Actually Do and How Long It Takes
My commercial workflow runs on Lightroom Classic paired with a 2023 MacBook Pro M2 Max and a calibrated Eizo ColorEdge monitor. I don’t mention the gear to flex. I mention it because RAW processing speed is partly a hardware conversation, and you should know what “fast” looks like relative to a real setup.
My import preset applies: Camera Matching profile, lens correction enabled, chromatic aberration removed, a slight noise reduction baseline (Luminance 20, Color 25 in the old panel, or Denoise set to 20 in the AI panel if I’m shooting above ISO 1600), and a custom sharpening setting of Amount 40, Radius 1.0, Detail 25. This takes zero time per file because it’s baked into the import.
From there, a typical 300-image commercial shoot gets a first pass using Lightroom’s Survey mode and the P/X flagging system. I rate selects in about 25 minutes. The selects, usually 60-80 images, get individual attention. Color grading, exposure refinement, and any healing or masking work adds another 60-90 minutes. Total processing time for a full commercial shoot: under two hours from raw import to export-ready files.
Export settings for client delivery: full-resolution TIFF at 16-bit for retouching handoffs, JPEG at quality 90 for web or direct-to-client galleries. I use sRGB for web delivery and AdobeRGB for print. File sizes on a 61-megapixel Sony a7R V run roughly 120MB per 16-bit TIFF and 15-25MB per high-quality JPEG.
What Happens When You Skip the Calibration Step
A few years ago, my twins, who were nine at the time, were on my office computer while I stepped out to take a call. They didn’t delete client files that day, but they did open Lightroom and start clicking. By the time I came back, they’d reset several develop defaults to zero. Three subsequent client shoots imported with no profile, flat tone, and default Adobe Standard color before I caught it on a second monitor calibration check.
It took me 20 minutes to re-import those sessions with corrected settings and re-sync the edits. Not a disaster, but enough of a disruption to remind me: your defaults are infrastructure. Treat them like it. Document your import preset settings the same way you document your camera kit list. A shared Google Doc or a note in whatever project management tool you use, Notion, Asana, a plain text file, takes ten minutes to create and will save you two hours when something breaks.
Your RAW File Is the Original Negative. Treat It That Way.
Shoot RAW plus fine JPEG if you want in-camera previews that match client expectations on set. Process RAW with a locked, camera-matched profile applied at import. Export to the right color space for the right output. None of this is glamorous, and none of it happens automatically.
The photographers who build reputations for consistent, deliverable work aren’t more talented than the ones who don’t. They’ve just made the boring decisions once, written them down, and stopped remaking them on every shoot.
